As students prepared to leave for summer break, they had the unique opportunity to engage with Dr. Mir Afzal Tajik, a prominent intellectual, researcher, and educationalist hailing from the picturesque Arkari Valley in Chitral. Currently an Associate Professor at Nazarbayov University in Kazakhstan, Dr. Tajik shared his insights on leadership and education with students at Aga Khan Higher Secondary School (AKHSS), leaving an indelible mark on their perspectives.
A Journey of Dedication and Impact
Dr. Tajik began his career as a teacher with the Aga Khan Education Service, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to education. His dedication soon led him to various roles within the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), culminating in his position as interim dean. Beyond his academic duties, he has actively volunteered for various Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies, exemplifying his commitment to giving back to the community.
An accomplished academic, Dr. Tajik earned his PhD from the University of Toronto, Canada, and has authored numerous research papers. He heads the PhD program at Nazarbayov University's School of Graduate Studies and has edited notable works, including "Redefining Educational Leadership in Central Asia" and "Educational Policies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan: Contested Terrain in the 21st Century." His contributions to the field of education have been recognized through various awards, including the prestigious Distinguished Service Award from AKU-IED in 2024.
Transforming Education in Arkari Valley
In an effort to uplift his home community, Dr. Tajik established the Golden Jubilee English Medium School and College in Arkari Valley. This institution, which offers free hostel facilities, has become a beacon of hope for local youth, providing high-quality education thanks to the support of Aga Khan Education Services and the dedication of Dr. Tajik himself. Through his efforts, he has attracted friends and investors to enhance the educational landscape of the region, proving that commitment can drive transformation.
A Session to Remember
During his visit to AKHSS, Dr. Tajik captivated students and staff alike with his engaging discourse on leadership. He emphasized that leadership is not merely a position but a practice reflected in daily actions—be it in sports, classrooms, or broader society. His insights on ethical leadership resonated deeply, as he described a great leader as one who stands firm on the moral strength of their decisions.
Dr. Tajik encouraged students to embrace leadership in their choices, urging them to view failures as stepping stones rather than obstacles. His reflections on societal pressures and the phenomenon of brain drain offered students valuable perspectives as they contemplate their futures.
The session, attended by students from both morning and extended shifts, was further enriched by the presence of Saifuddin Sahib, the National Coordinator of the Student Counseling and Support Program. The principal, Tufail Nawaz Sahib, along with Saifuddin Sahib, expressed gratitude by presenting Dr. Tajik with a souvenir, recognizing the time and wisdom he shared.
To honor Dr. Tajik's visit, members of AKHSS's music club performed "Kalam-e-Iqbal," celebrating the rich cultural heritage that binds them together.
A Lasting Impact
Dr. Mir Afzal Tajik's visit to AKHSS Chitral was not just an event but a profound experience that inspired students to aspire for greatness and to lead with integrity. As they embark on their summer break, the wisdom imparted by Dr. Tajik will undoubtedly guide them in their personal and academic journeys.
